Lucy Liu has opened up about her decision to confront Bill Murray on the set of Charlie’s Angels (2000), addressing his alleged "unacceptable" behavior.

Speaking with The Guardian, Liu reiterated her stance on the incident she first disclosed during a 2021 appearance on the Asian Enough podcast.

“When I sense something is not right, I’m going to protect myself,” Liu said. “It’s innate. I would’ve done that in any situation. There’s no need to condescend or put others down.”

The incident occurred in 1999 during the filming of Charlie’s Angels, where Liu starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. Murray allegedly hurled personal insults at Liu, which she refused to tolerate. “Some of the language was inexcusable and unacceptable,” Liu said. “I stood up for myself, and I don’t regret it.”

Barrymore later praised Liu’s actions on her talk show, describing how their team supported Liu and dealt with the situation head-on. “Lucy said, ‘I do not accept that kind of behavior,’” Barrymore shared. “We were strong and moved forward without accepting anything less.”

Liu credits her instincts for helping her navigate potential challenges throughout her Hollywood career, adding that she avoided toxic situations by trusting herself.

The controversy resurfaced as part of broader scrutiny surrounding Murray’s behavior. In 2022, production on Aziz Ansari’s Being Mortal was suspended due to complaints about Murray’s conduct, and Geena Davis also alleged harassment by Murray in her memoir.

Liu’s stand serves as a reminder of the importance of workplace respect and the need to confront unacceptable behavior.
