President-elect Donald Trump, accompanied by his wife Melania, paid his respects to the late President Jimmy Carter, who lay in state in Washington on Wednesday.

The couple stood in silence for several minutes by Carter’s flag-draped coffin in the Capitol Rotunda.

Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981.

He was praised for his humanitarian efforts after his presidency and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Trump’s visit comes as flags are flown at half-staff across the nation in honor of Carter, in line with the 30-day mourning period following the death of a US president.

Despite his criticism of the flag protocol, Trump participated in the tribute before his inauguration as the 47th president on January 20.

Carter’s body will remain in the Capitol until Thursday for public viewing, and a state funeral service will be held at the National Cathedral, with President Joe Biden delivering the eulogy.

All four living former presidents—Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Trump—are expected to attend the service.
