Jasprit Bumrah's fitness has become a growing concern following back spasms towards the end of India's recent tour of Australia. The injury forced him to miss bowling in the second innings of the fifth Test in Sydney.
With the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy fast approaching, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering resting the pacer for most of the upcoming white-ball series against England to ensure he is fully fit for the prestigious tournament.
Indian media reports indicate that the full extent of Bumrah's injury remains unclear, with a decision on his participation in the Champions Trophy contingent on the severity of the issue. The situation has raised alarms about Bumrah’s heavy workload, with the 30-year-old pacer being relied upon heavily in recent series.
During the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah bowled 151.2 overs across five Tests, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 32 wickets at an impressive average of 13.06, which included three five-wicket hauls.
If Bumrah's injury is diagnosed as Grade 1, he may require two to three weeks to recover. A Grade 2 injury could sideline him for up to six weeks, while a Grade 3 injury may demand up to three months of rehabilitation.
India's next challenge is a five-match T20I series against England, beginning on January 22, followed by three ODIs. Bumrah was initially expected to skip the T20I series but was scheduled to play at least two ODIs to prepare for the Champions Trophy.
However, depending on the severity of his injury, he may miss the entire ODI series or feature in only one match. The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is set to begin on February 19, with India facing Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai.
