The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a near collision at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) involving a plane carrying the Gonzaga men’s basketball team. The incident occurred on December 27, 2024, when a charter flight operated by Key Lime Air was taxiing after landing from Spokane. Air traffic controllers instructed the plane to hold its position, but it reportedly moved beyond the designated stop point, approaching the path of a Delta Airlines flight preparing for takeoff.

According to NBC Los Angeles, an air traffic controller issued an urgent command to “STOP, STOP, STOP,” preventing the charter plane from crossing the runway edge line. Despite the close call, no collision occurred. Kevin Ray, a Los Angeles TV news photojournalist, captured the incident on video, which has since been widely circulated online, highlighting the critical role of vigilance in aviation.

Key Lime Air, the Denver-based charter company operating the flight, emphasized its commitment to safety and pilot training in a statement. Jon Coleman, the company’s Senior Vice President, said, “Safety of those entrusted to us is our highest priority. We are working with the FAA to determine the facts of the event and will respond accordingly.”

The FAA confirmed its investigation and is assessing all factors involved. Key Lime Air has pledged full cooperation with the inquiry, underscoring the importance of strict adherence to aviation safety protocols.

The Gonzaga men’s basketball team was returning from Spokane at the time of the incident, underscoring the routine nature of such travel for collegiate teams. While such incidents are rare in aviation, this close call highlights the importance of clear communication and stringent safety measures to prevent potentially catastrophic outcomes.
