"When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished," says an old adage. This is particularly true of firemen of the metropolitan city of Karachi who had had a busy year battling and dousing thousands of blazes in 2024, risking their lives to save others'.
There have been as many as 2,187 fire incidents in the teeming metropolis between January 1 and December 17, as per the statistic released by the Fire Brigade Department on Saturday.
The breakdown shows that the highest number of fire incidents, 230, had been reported in January, followed by 214 in February; 228 in March; 165 in April; 203 in May; 200 in June; 143 in July; 149 in August; 119 in September; 200 in October; 175 in November; and 161 until December 17.
Similarly, the statistics show that the highest number of fire incidents, 179, had been reported to the Saddar Fire Station. The breakdown reveals that 176 incidents were reported at Central Fire Station; 140 at Nazimabad Fire Station; 123 at Lyari Fire Station; 143 at SITE Fire Station.
120 at Korangi Fire Station; 61 at Landhi Fire Station; 150 at Gulistan-e-Mustafa Fire Station; 71 at Orangi Fire Station; 54 at Shah Faisal Fire Station; 146 at Manzoor Colony Fire Station; 125 at North Karachi Fire Station; 21 at Baldia Town Fire Station; 47 at Bolton Market Fire Station; 117 at Gulistan-e-Johar Fire Station; 44 at Civic Center Faiz Station; and 65 at Malir Fire Station.
Moreover, Gulshan-e-Iqbal Fire Station received 129, Gulshan-e-Maymar Fire Station 23, SITE Superhighway-2 Fire Station 55, and SITE Association received 17 distress calls of fire incidents. There were 67 incidents of fire in Korangi Association of Trade & Industry (KATI), 33 in North Karachi Association of Trade & Industry (NKATI), 69 in the Export Processing Zone, while 11 incidents of fire occurred in Landhi Association of Trade & Industry.
