KARACHI:

As a formality, rarely implemented, the city's administration has imposed a ban on aerial firing on the New Year Eve.

The ban is announced each year. At the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2024, the air of the port city had resonated with the crackle of gunfire and blasts of fireworks.

However, the madness of aerial firing left 29 people injured some with lifelong disabilities. Police had managed to arrest 38 individuals for aerial firing and carrying weapons despite imposition of Section 144.

This year too, Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has issued a notification imposing Section 144 in the city for two days, from December 31 to January 1, 2025.

This notification was meant to effectively ban aerial firing and fireworks on the New Year. It instructs police to take strict legal action against anyone who violates this ban.

Authorities have reminded the public that every year, several individuals are injured or lose their lives due to reckless firing and mishandling of fireworks during celebrations.

The implementation of Section 144 seeks to ensure public safety and maintain peace in the city as residents welcome the New Year.
