Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, renowned for Taxi to the Dark Side, and Anonymous Content, the production company behind acclaimed films like Spotlight and The Revenant, are joining forces on a documentary exploring the tragic killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. At the center of the story is Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old Ivy League graduate accused of carrying out the brazen attack.

The incident made national headlines when Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate and former valedictorian, was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. Authorities allege Mangione, who reportedly carried a manifesto referencing Michael Moore’s Sicko, used a ghost gun to carry out the brazen daylight attack.

The upcoming documentary will examine how systemic issues—particularly frustrations with the U.S. healthcare system—may have contributed to the tragedy. It aims to unpack broader societal questions, including healthcare denial of care, rising medical costs, and the values placed on human life.

Mangione’s background adds complexity to the story. He reportedly suffered from severe back pain requiring surgery, with his social media bio featuring an X-ray of his spine. UnitedHealthcare, which Thompson led, is known for rejecting claims at twice the industry average, a fact that has sparked polarizing reactions nationwide.

The project will also explore Mangione’s legal battle, as high-profile attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo prepares his defense. Mangione has yet to be indicted, with further developments expected soon.
