JARANWALA:

Punjab Transport Secretary Dr Ahmad Javid Qazi has announcing that 86 eco-friendly electric buses will operate on six routes in the first phase. These include 50 nine-metre and 36 11-metre buses, with funding already approved by the Punjab Cabinet.

He expressed these views during a visit to Faisalabad to evaluate urban transport needs, plan the metro bus service, and oversee the launch of intra-city electric buses.

During his visit, he chaired a meeting at the FDA Complex Committee Room, attended by key officials and stakeholders.

During the meeting, Consultant Asian Development Bank Muhammad Mobasher presented plans for the metro bus service, while CTO Punjab Transport Company Hassan Faiq Manhas provided updates on the intra-city electric bus project.

Three sites - Ghulam Muhammadabad, Sargodha Road, and Gatwala—have been earmarked for the construction of bus depots to support the electric bus operations.

Dr Qazi emphasised the importance of integrated planning, directing district administration, FDA, traffic police, and municipal corporations to focus on developing routes and managing road infrastructure for the electric buses.

He also instructed that the metro bus project be synchronized with the electric bus initiative, ensuring thorough consultation with all relevant departments, including WASA.
