Oscar-nominated writers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are reportedly in the early stages of developing a sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Barbie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo has settled on an idea and shared it with Warner Bros., though both the studio and the filmmakers have denied any formal plans are in place.
The original Barbie film, directed by Gerwig and co-written with Baumbach, grossed $1.4 billion globally, becoming the year’s top box-office hit. The movie, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, received critical acclaim and eight Oscar nominations, solidifying it as a cultural phenomenon.
Gerwig previously expressed her commitment to creating a sequel only if the story felt meaningful. “If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t, there’s no more,” she said at a 2024 event. Now, sources claim Gerwig and Baumbach have found that "undertow" and are brainstorming story details.
Baumbach is currently finishing post-production on an untitled Netflix film, while Gerwig is preparing a Chronicles of Narnia adaptation. Despite their busy schedules, the pair reportedly plans to collaborate on the sequel script, continuing their creative process of writing separately and sharing drafts.
Fans are eager to return to Barbie Land, and Margot Robbie has expressed enthusiasm for revisiting the world. “Greta cracked the code on this film, as only she could,” Robbie said, praising Gerwig’s singular vision.
For now, details of the sequel remain under wraps, but if it moves forward, it promises to build on the humor, creativity, and cultural commentary that made Barbie a global success.
