Capcom has officially announced a new entry in the Onimusha series titled Way of the Sword. The reveal took place during The Game Awards 2024, showcasing a short gameplay clip and confirming a planned release in 2026. This marks the first mainline addition to the franchise since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006, making it a long-awaited return for fans of the series.

The teaser video hinted at a departure from the classic fixed-camera perspectives of earlier Onimusha games, favoring full 3D combat. Players were treated to glimpses of intense swordplay, with the protagonist battling samurai zombies and collecting golden orbs. The gameplay also teased a familiar face, with fans speculating the protagonist may be Samanosuke, the hero of the original 2001 Onimusha title.

With its new 3D combat system, Way of the Sword positions itself alongside modern action-adventure titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Phantom Blade Zero, and the Nioh series. Fans are hopeful the game will retain its signature blend of historical elements and supernatural themes while introducing fresh innovations to the genre.

The original Onimusha debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2001 and was later remastered in 2018 for modern platforms, including Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This remastered edition was the last release associated with the franchise, leaving fans eagerly awaiting new content.

Capcom has yet to reveal further details about the storyline or gameplay mechanics. Fans are optimistic that Way of the Sword could spark a broader revival of classic Capcom franchises.

Expected to launch in 2026, Way of the Sword is set to be one of Capcom’s flagship releases, potentially marking a new chapter for the Onimusha series.
