Lin-Manuel Miranda, celebrated for his Oscar-nominated music in Disney's Moana (2016), did not return to compose songs for the newly released Moana 2. Speaking at the premiere of Mufasa: The Lion King in Hollywood, the Tony-winning composer revealed to PEOPLE that his absence from the sequel was primarily due to timing and creative direction.
“There was never an opportunity to be on Moana 2,” Miranda shared, noting that the project already had its songwriters when it transitioned from a TV series concept to a full-fledged sequel. He expressed his pride in the team of composers, including Opetaia Foa'i, Mark Mancina, Abigail Barlow, and Emily Bear, who crafted the film’s vibrant soundtrack.
While fans of Moana won’t hear Miranda’s signature style in the sequel, he continues to work closely with Disney. His recent collaboration with director Barry Jenkins on Mufasa: The Lion King has been a "labor of love." Miranda also emphasized his insistence on working with The Lion King’s original songwriter, Lebo M, whom he called "the secret sound of the franchise."
“Barry Jenkins is a genius,” Miranda said, praising the Moonlight director. He added that working with Lebo M brought authenticity and continuity to the beloved franchise. Miranda even took on the challenge of writing a villain song, showcasing his versatility as a composer.
While Moana 2 brings a fresh musical perspective to the beloved franchise, Miranda’s continued contributions to Disney projects highlight his integral role in shaping its modern soundtracks. Fans can catch Moana 2 in theaters now and look forward to Mufasa: The Lion King when it premieres on December 20.
