A Coat of Many Colours consists of approximately sixty objects, spread over five purpose-built galleries, drawn principally from Sindh but with some representation from Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab and Kutch in India, as stated by a press release.

Most of the objects are over a hundred years old and have been documented. The dynamic forms and vibrant colours of the textiles on display are a celebration of life and function as a form of verbal communication. Motif, pattern and composition define a woman's identity, her marital and very often, the social status of her family.

The objects are displayed in six distinct categories divided by utilitarian use. Some of the objects have been exhibited and published abroad but access to public viewing within Pakistan has been limited. This exhibition is expected to continue until November 2025.

The next exhibition will feature textiles from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Over time, two of the galleries will be adapted for visiting and temporary exhibitions with the remaining three housing a permanent display.

The artefacts displayed in A Coat of Many Colours exemplify the cultural richness and heritage of their origins. Emphasising the storytelling power embedded in textile art, each piece narrates tales of tradition, skill, and personal expression. The fabrics displayed reflect not just the individual identities of their creators but also the collective spirit of the communities they belong to.

By preserving and documenting these cultural artefacts, the exhibit becomes a platform for dialogue about the historical and social significance of textile practices in the region. With its diverse regional representation, this initiative not only preserves history but also fosters public appreciation for vibrant, traditional craftsmanship, particularly now that local access to these objects has been opened up.
