The FBI and New Jersey State Police are seeking public information following reports of drones spotted flying over Morris County last week.
The drones were seen in several areas along the Raritan River. Washington Township Mayor Matt Murello confirmed that law enforcement had been alerted about the sightings, primarily occurring at night.
"Law enforcement has been notified for the last week or so about people seeing drones mostly at night," Murello said.
These drones, larger than typical hobbyist models, raised concerns due to their proximity to both the Picatinny Arsenal and President-elect Donald Trump's Bedminster golf course.
A video obtained by WABC-TV, recorded by Bridgewater resident Stephanie Marie, shows drones flying silently across the sky, about six feet in size and equipped with lights.
"We've been getting complaints as well in this area. We do see recreational drones, sometimes flown, but these don't appear to be that," Murello added.
In a joint statement, multiple law enforcement agencies in New Jersey addressed the concerns:
"County and local law enforcement agencies are aware of the recurring reports of drone activity around Morris and Somerset counties, and acknowledge the public's concern about these repeated sightings."
Local police have stated there is no known threat to public safety. However, the FAA is monitoring the situation and has temporarily shut down airspace in response to the sightings. Unauthorized drone use that endangers aircraft or people on the ground could result in a fine of up to $75,000.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov.
