Hundreds gather to honor Irene Roozbayani, celebrated South Shields makeup artist, community figure

A large crowd gathered at West Road Crematorium to celebrate the life of Irene Roozbayani, a beloved make-up artist and social media influencer from South Shields. Irene, known for her work at Fenwick’s Charlotte Tilbury counter and affectionately called the "Persian Cheryl," passed away on November 7 at the age of 41 after a private battle with bowel cancer.

The emotional service began with Beyoncé’s Halo and included heartfelt tributes from close friends and family. Irene’s coffin arrived in a white horse-drawn carriage, symbolizing her elegance and unique spirit. Friends described Irene as inspiring a generation of make-up artists while maintaining a kind and thoughtful demeanor that made everyone feel special.

Friend Daniela shared that Irene, despite suggestions to work internationally, remained loyal to her North East roots, calling Newcastle her forever home. Alex, another close friend, recalled fond memories of traveling with Irene for her 40th birthday and spoke of Irene’s special bond with her father, Yousef. Asif, another mourner, highlighted her glamour and warmth, emphasizing her ability to make others feel important.

Officiant Caroline Brown summarized Irene’s life lessons, urging attendees to live with passion, value kindness, and recognize inner beauty. Donations collected during the ceremony will benefit the Marie Curie Hospice in Newcastle, where Irene spent her final days.

Irene’s father, Yousef, expressed his deep grief, describing her as a generous and joyful individual who touched countless lives. He fondly remembered her impeccable taste, which helped her excel in her career.

Colleagues from Fenwick and the Freeman Hospital’s oncology team also paid tribute, underscoring Irene’s impact as both a professional and a person. Her legacy of positivity and elegance continues to inspire all who knew her.
