RDA bans approval of new housing schemes

RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has imposed a ban on approving new private housing schemes in Rawalpindi Tehsil until the completion of its master plan.

During a press conference at the Rawalpindi Press Club, RDA Director General Kanza Murtaza announced that the authority has finalised a list of illegal housing schemes after five months of extensive work. Forums have also been established to safeguard the rights of investors affected by these unauthorised projects.

She emphasised that the RDA is formulating a policy to prevent illegal constructions from progressing beyond their initial stages, thereby avoiding the need for regularisation later—a practice that often leads to significant challenges.

She also highlighted strict action against RDA employees found complicit in illegal construction activities.

She referred to a private society being developed by Chinese investors and said its security is being given due priority. Kinza Murtaza clarified that while the RDA recognises the housing sector's role in bolstering the economy, it also underscores the importance of preserving agricultural land.

She noted that the suspension of new scheme approvals will remain in place until the master plan is completed, aligning with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
