Ed Sheeran has voiced his disapproval over the use of his vocals in the 40th-anniversary mix of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?, stating that his permission was not sought by the organizers.

The singer, who participated in Band Aid 30 alongside artists like One Direction and Sam Smith, revealed on Instagram that he would have “respectfully” declined if asked.

In his post, Sheeran also referenced criticism from Ghanaian-English artist Fuse ODG, who has opposed Band Aid initiatives for perpetuating damaging stereotypes about Africa. Fuse ODG declined to participate in Band Aid 30, arguing that such efforts fuel pity rather than promoting Africa as a hub for investment and tourism. Sheeran echoed these concerns, stating, “My understanding of the narrative associated with this has changed.”

The latest version of the song blends voices from previous Band Aid recordings, featuring artists like Harry Styles, Bono, and George Michael, with proceeds benefiting the Band Aid Trust. While Sheeran supports empowering African voices, he emphasized a forward-looking approach to aid initiatives.

Sheeran has collaborated with African artists like Burna Boy and Fireboy DML, further showcasing his commitment to authentic representations of the continent’s culture.
