Liberal PBS News commentator Jonathan Capehart expressed shock at early election results showing former President Donald Trump in a strong position.

“There’s a shift right and then there’s a shift to Trump,” Capehart vented on the program. “I am mystified in some ways simply because we’re talking about a twice-impeached, four-times indicted, convicted-on-34-felony-counts former president.”

“That’s one bucket, then in another bucket, you have all the things that he’s been saying on the campaign trail that gets to the decency,” he added. “I am mystified that despite all of that, he’s gaining support relative to 2020.”

Capehart went on to lament that the election could reflect “who we are as a country,” adding, “from what I’m seeing right now, I’m not sure that I like it.”

Recent polls and analyses show that Trump’s support base has remained resilient despite legal challenges and public controversies. Analysts suggest that Trump’s appeal is bolstered by economic dissatisfaction among voters and a desire for policies viewed as addressing these grievances, contributing to his continued relevance in the 2024 race.
