Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is under fire as social media users criticize her over a viral clip in which she appears to be pretending to speak with a voter on the phone.

Harris visited the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in Washington, DC, where staffers and organizers were phone-banking to reach voters before polls closed. She was holding her favorite campaign snack, Doritos.

In the widely-shared video posted on X, Harris can be seen on a phone call, talking to a voter.

“I am well,” she said. “Have you voted already? You did? Thank you!”

She appears to make another call, saying, “It’s Kamala Harris – Waiting for you to grow 10 years more,” she said. “It’s so important, we have so much work to do.”

As her supporters applauded, she waved her phone toward them. Observant viewers noticed that her phone had the camera app open instead of a call screen, leading them to accuse her of staging the phone call.

The clip quickly spread across social media, sparking a wave of reactions, with users criticizing and ridiculing her actions. The incident has ignited a discussion about authenticity in political campaigns in the digital era.

“It's so embarrassing if she were actually on a call, you would see the call screen with the caller ID on the iPhone,” a user commented on X.

Another critic commented, “Is there anything real or authentic about this campaign?”

A third user mocked her, saying, “Not only is she fake, she's dumb. Showing the phone like that… what was she thinking!?”

Others defended her, noting, “You can use the phone app and call and switch to the camera app while on a call. I just tried it. You can also talk on the phone while the camera app is running full screen.”
