In the Indian state of Rajasthan, a ban has been placed on referring to cows as "stray".The government directive states that words like "helpless" or "destitute" should be used instead for cows and other livestock found wandering on the streets or elsewhere.

According to Indian media, the Rajasthan government has issued an order prohibiting the use of the term "stray" in relation to cows, declaring it disrespectful and inappropriate.

The order was released by the Gopalan Department and is addressed to all relevant government departments and district collectors. Dr. Samit Sharma, the secretary of the department, explained that cows hold significant cultural value in Indian society.

He stated, “Cows are an important part of our cultural heritage. In today’s time, due to various reasons, some cows become destitute. It is inappropriate and derogatory to use the word stray for these cows. This is contrary to our cultural values.”

The directive comes in the wake of increased advocacy for cows' rights in Rajasthan. Recently, a BJP MLA from Sikar, Gordhan Verma, called for cows to be granted the status of "State Mother" and proposed the death penalty for those found guilty of killing them.

The Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister affirmed that the BJP government is dedicated to the protection and promotion of cows and bulls.

To further this commitment, a Chief Minister Animal Husbandry Development Fund will be established, with an allocation of Rs 250 crore dedicated to cow welfare initiatives.
