White-ball captaincy to be decided after Naqvi-Rizwan meeting: Rashid Latif

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Rashid Latif has revealed that the national team's white-ball captaincy will be determined following a crucial meeting between PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan. 

Latif shared this update on social media, stating that the decision, which has been delayed due to Naqvi's absence from the country, will soon be finalised.

"The decision regarding the captaincy for ODIs and T20s will be made after a meeting between the PCB chairman and Mohammad Rizwan," Latif posted, hinting at Rizwan as the frontrunner for the leadership role.

The captaincy position has been uncertain since Babar Azam’s resignation on October 2. Babar’s departure came after a series of leadership changes within Pakistan cricket, including his earlier resignation as all-format captain under former PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf. 

At that time, Shan Masood took over the red-ball team, and Shaheen Afridi was handed the T20I captaincy. 

However, Babar was reinstated as the white-ball captain ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup during Naqvi’s tenure as PCB chairman.

With Babar now stepping aside from white-ball leadership, Rizwan and Mohammad Haris have emerged as the main candidates for the captaincy. 

Rizwan is believed to be the likely successor to lead the team in both formats.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to announce the squads for the upcoming white-ball tours of Australia and Zimbabwe within the next few days. 

The team is scheduled to depart for Australia on October 29, where they will face the hosts in a three-match ODI series, followed by a three-match T20I series.

Pakistan’s first ODI against Australia will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on November 4.
