Justin Bieber has paid tribute to Liam Payne following the One Direction singer’s tragic death on October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
Bieber reposted a fan-made video on Instagram on October 21, which showed fans lighting candles and mourning Payne at a memorial. Alongside the video, Bieber shared a broken heart emoji. The voiceover in the video reassured fans that “it’s okay to mourn someone’s passing,” acknowledging the grief felt by Payne’s supporters.
Liam Payne’s former One Direction bandmates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, expressed their devastation in a joint statement on Instagram: “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing... The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.” Payne’s sister, Nicola Payne, also released a statement, expressing her heartbreak: “When I saw the news pop up on my phone... I wanted so much for this to be untrue.” She added a promise to ensure Payne’s legacy lives on for his son, Bear, whom he shares with Cheryl Cole.
Investigators in Argentina believe Payne may have fallen while unconscious, according to a press release from the Argentina National Prosecutor's Office. Payne was 31 years old.
