Director James Gunn has revealed that his own rescue dog, Ozu, was the inspiration behind the introduction of Krypto, Superman's loyal canine companion, in the upcoming Superman movie. In a heartwarming post on social media, Gunn shared the story of how Ozu, a rescue pup his family adopted, changed his life and influenced the script of the film.

Gunn wrote, "Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least." He continued, "It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?' And thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life."

The first look at Krypto, shared by Gunn on social media, shows the character sitting on the moon with Superman, played by David Corenswet, gazing out at Earth. The film, set to release on July 11, 2025, will follow Superman's story as he reconciles his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kansas.

Gunn's post was shared to commemorate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The film's cast includes a star-studded lineup, including Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Nathan Fillion.
