Vice President Kamala Harris confirmed during a “60 Minutes” interview that she owns a Glock and has fired it, citing her law enforcement background as the reason for her firearm ownership. Speaking to correspondent Bill Whitaker, Harris said she has had the gun “for quite some time” and responded with “of course I have” when asked if she had fired it. Harris first mentioned her firearm ownership during a recent presidential debate, telling former President Donald Trump that she and running mate Tim Walz are gun owners and dismissing claims that they intend to confiscate firearms.
Harris reiterated this stance in Monday’s interview, stating it wasn’t the first time she discussed owning a gun. She has previously mentioned personal safety as the primary reason for owning a firearm. “If somebody breaks into my house, they're getting shot,” she said during an event with Oprah Winfrey. Both Harris and Walz support gun control measures, including universal background checks, banning assault weapons, and implementing red flag laws.
The interview comes amid criticism of Harris for not being specific enough about her platform. Polls show a close race between her and Trump, with the Harris campaign maintaining a significant fundraising lead.
