Tennis star Paula Badosa has come under fire from fans for a controversial gesture made following her exit from the 2024 China Open. After her semifinal loss to Coco Gauff, Badosa’s trainer, Pol Toledo, shared a photo on social media where she appeared to hold chopsticks to her eyelids. Fans quickly criticized the action, interpreting it as mocking Asian people.

In response to the backlash, Badosa addressed the criticism on Instagram, denying any ill intent. "Oh no, please don’t get it that way. Never thought it would get interpreted this way. We weren’t even imitating Asian people," she explained. She further clarified, "I was playing around with my face and wrinkles. I love Asia, one of my favorite places, and have plenty of Asian friends. They are the kindest."

Despite her explanation, many fans remained unsatisfied, with some calling her response "ignorant" and "cowardly." One fan commented, "Just admit you're ignorant and apologize," while another said, "This has to be satire." Others expressed frustration, referencing past insensitive remarks by public figures in similar situations.

Badosa, who reached the semifinals in Beijing before losing to Gauff 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, will next compete at the Wuhan Open. As she prepares for her next match, the controversy continues to swirl on social media.
