Will Ferrell discusses transphobia ahead of the release of his Netflix documentary.

Will Ferrell has spoken out about transphobia in an interview with The Independent during the press tour for his upcoming Netflix documentary Will & Harper. Ferrell addressed the reasons behind transphobia, stating, "I think we fear what we don’t know." He emphasized that he finds it perplexing why some view the trans community as a threat, adding, "If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself."

The documentary, Will & Harper, centers on the comedian’s friendship with Harper Steele, whom Ferrell met during their time on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s. Steele came out as transgender 30 years into their friendship. The film, which was acquired by Netflix after premiering at Sundance, follows the two on a road trip as they reconnect after Steele’s transition.

Ferrell acknowledged his lack of prior knowledge about the trans community before Steele came out to him, telling Variety at Sundance, "I had met trans people, but I didn’t have anyone personally in my life." He also recalled Steele's coming-out email to friends, noting that he and others were immediately supportive and eager to learn how to help.

Will & Harper is set to stream on Netflix starting Sept. 27.
