Cooper Koch, star of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, has addressed the criticism surrounding the series, particularly from Erik Menéndez himself.
Erik, along with the public, has voiced concerns over the portrayal of events in the show, especially the depiction of a sexual relationship between the brothers.
In an interview with Variety, Koch expressed empathy towards Erik's response. “I sympathize with him, I empathize with him. I get it," he said. "I understand how difficult it would be to have the worst part of your life be televised for millions of people to see.”
Koch emphasized the emotional toll that playing Erik had on him and his desire to approach the role with authenticity and integrity.
Erik Menéndez previously released a statement criticizing the show, calling it “rooted in horrible and blatant lies.” He further condemned Ryan Murphy, the series’ creator, for allegedly distorting the facts surrounding their case, particularly the sexual abuse allegations.
Murphy responded to Erik’s statement during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, noting that Erik hadn't yet seen the show. Murphy said, “I hope he does see the show. I think he sees the work that Cooper Koch did,” while acknowledging the difficulty of seeing one's life dramatized on screen.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story explores the brothers’ 1989 murder of their parents and their subsequent trial, a case that continues to stir debate decades later.
