Greta Thunberg condemns 'genocide' in Palestine during Stockholm protest

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg took a stand against what she described as Israel’s "genocide" in Palestine, during a protest in Stockholm on Saturday.

Speaking to a crowd of approximately 5,000 demonstrators, Thunberg expressed outrage at the situation in Gaza, urging immediate global action to halt the violence.

“It’s outrageous,” Thunberg said, speaking to Anadolu Agency at the rally. She expressed disbelief that people could witness the atrocities unfolding in Palestine and continue with their lives as though unaffected.

“Remaining silent during a genocide is being complicit,” Thunberg added, emphasizing the need for individuals and nations to take a strong stance against Israel’s actions.

Thunberg advocated for boycotts of Israeli products, divestment from Israeli companies, and the imposition of sanctions as ways to pressure Israel to stop the violence in Gaza.

She stressed that those with the power to act must do so, adding that countries like Sweden should take tangible steps to support Palestinians.

The protest, held in the Odenplan area of Stockholm, was organized by various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.

The demonstrators also demanded unobstructed access for humanitarian aid to reach the region, which has been devastated by Israeli military actions.

Protesters waved Palestinian flags and carried banners with messages such as "Children are being killed in Gaza" and "Stop the genocide," while chanting "Freedom for Palestine."

The demonstration reflected growing global concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and widespread calls for an end to the ongoing conflict.

Thunberg's comments align with the broader movement advocating for global solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Her high-profile stance adds significant weight to calls for international action, including boycotts and sanctions, to address the violence and suffering in Gaza.

The rally is one of many worldwide protests urging a halt to the violence and calling for justice for Palestinians amid escalating tensions in the region.

Israel has killed nearly 41,300 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 95,500 in Gaza since October 7, and is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice for its military campaign.
