NTDC restructuring, transparency urged

Minister calls for efficient decision-making, collaboration with development partners

ISLAMABAD:

An introductory meeting bringing together the Chairpersons of the Board of Directors (BoDs), CEOs of power companies, and experts from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank and other development partners was held on Friday. Federal Minister for Power Division, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Laghari, presided over the session, marking the first time such a gathering had been held to develop a comprehensive strategy for the power sector's future.

Laghari explained the need to restructure the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) to strengthen and sustain the grid. He noted that system inefficiencies stem from outdated infrastructure and technology, adding that greater transparency in operations is essential to achieving reform goals.

He urged development partners to provide effective proposals for creating a more efficient and transparent power sector. Current processes, which require referring all matters to the NTDC board, are slowing down decision-making and missing key targets.

Laghari stressed the importance of transparency in data and investment plans to reduce electricity costs for consumers. "We need prompt, data-driven decisions for the benefit of consumers," he stated.

The minister appreciated the support of development partners and the newly appointed BoD chairpersons, urging them to focus on efficient decision-making, quick issue resolution, and accelerating technology upgrades, including smart meter installations.

He suggested that the development partners collaborate with distribution companies to upgrade technology. He added that the installation of smart meters should be accelerated and the distribution of electricity should be made more effective. He warned that delays or cost overruns in ongoing projects would no longer be tolerated, directing the BoDs to ensure timely project completion.
