ISLAMABAD:

Member of the COP-29 Advisory Committee Executive Director Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri has called on the global community to embrace the 'COP29 Truce' as a symbol of human solidarity in addressing the severe impacts of environmental degradation, which exacerbate conflicts and disasters.

As the only South Asian expert on the COP-29 Advisory Committee, Dr Suleri joined Azerbaijan's COP-29 Truce Initiative, urging the world to adopt a unified, coordinated approach to tackling climate change. He emphasised that the upcoming COP-29 in Baku presents a historic opportunity for nations to come together and advance the global climate action agenda.

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, he stated that climate change and global warming are threatening Earth, the only home for mankind, and called for unwavering commitment from all nations to confront this crisis. He stressed that the primary message of COP-29 is the potential for humanity to set aside political differences and unite to save the planet.

"At a time when conflicts are spreading and intensifying, this idea of unity is more important than ever. It offers a chance to bridge divides and pursue lasting peace," Dr Suleri remarked. He further explained that conflicts not only increase greenhouse gas emissions but also destroy ecosystems and pollute natural resources, intensifying the effects of climate change and hindering global efforts to protect the environment.

The expert called for full attention and cooperation during the climate talks, urging all parties to observe the COP Truce throughout the duration of COP-29. He explained that the COP Truce, modelled after the Olympic Truce, should act as a symbol of human solidarity, aiming for a safer, more sustainable future. "By prioritising peace and climate action, we can ensure a livable planet for future generations," he added.
