The 2024 Emmys concluded on a high note as HBO’s Hacks took home the coveted Best Comedy Series award, defying predictions that The Bear would win.

The critically acclaimed series also earned accolades for Best Writing and Best Actress, with Jean Smart securing the latter.

In his acceptance speech, co-creator Paul W. Downs called on the industry to prioritize stories centered around older characters. "When we pitched this show about two women, one of whom was over 60, we didn’t know if we would sell and we have to thank everyone that helped make this show," said Downs.

He went on to emphasize the underrepresentation of older characters on television. "About 20 percent of our population is over 60 and only three percent of those characters on television are 60 and I would like to see more of them because while I’m a great young supporting character, I would love to be a great old lead."

This marks the first time Hacks has won Best Comedy, despite past wins in other categories. The series was up against tough competition, including Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Reservation Dogs, What We Do in the Shadows, Only Murders in the Building, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Palm Royale.

Co-creator Lucia Aniello concluded the speech by encouraging ongoing support for the comedy genre and local comedians. "Comedy is so important to us but we think it can bridge divide when you laugh at someone, so please support comedy and support your local comedians," she urged.
