In a landmark achievement for Pakistan cricket, Saleema Imtiaz has been named the first Pakistani woman to the ICC International Panel of Development Umpires.

This prestigious appointment qualifies Imtiaz to officiate in international women’s bilateral matches and ICC Women’s Events, marking a historic moment for the sport in Pakistan.

Saleema, who has been a pioneering figure in women’s cricket officiating, began her career with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Women’s Umpires Panel in 2008.

Her extensive experience includes officiating at prominent events organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), such as the 2022 and 2024 ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup, and the 2023 ACC Emerging Women’s Cup in Hong Kong.

Most recently, she served as a member of the playing control team for the ACC Women’s Premier Cup 2024 in Kuala Lumpur.

The announcement of Saleema’s nomination to the ICC International Panel of Development Umpires highlights her significant contributions and sets a new precedent for female umpires in Pakistan.

Her role will see her officiate in the upcoming Pakistan-South Africa women’s T20I series, beginning Monday in Multan.

During this series, she will be paired with Faisal Aafreedi from the PCB International Panel of Umpires, with Nasir Hussain acting as the TV umpire.

Humairah Farah will serve as the fourth umpire, while Muhammad Javed Malik will oversee the series as the match referee.

Reflecting on her historic achievement, Saleema expressed her profound gratitude to the PCB.

“I am beyond thrilled to join the ICC International Panel of Development Umpires.

I owe immense gratitude to the Pakistan Cricket Board for the invaluable opportunities that paved the way for this achievement,” she said.

Saleema emphasized that her accomplishment is not just a personal victory but a triumph for aspiring female cricketers and umpires in Pakistan.

“This isn’t just a win for me – it’s a win for every aspiring female cricketer and umpire in Pakistan. I hope my success motivates countless women who dream of making their mark in the sport,” she added.

She also shared her long-standing ambition to represent Pakistan at the international level.

“Ever since Kainat made her debut for Pakistan in 2010, my own dream has been to represent my country at an international level. While I’ve had opportunities with the Asian Cricket Council, officiating at the highest level has always been the ultimate goal. I’m now focused on performing to the best of my abilities in both bilateral and ICC matches, and building my reputation as a reliable and respected match official.”

The PCB has also confirmed the match officials for the 2024-25 cricket season following an annual appraisal.

The appointment of Saleema underscores the PCB’s commitment to fostering female talent and advancing the role of women in cricket.

This historic moment not only celebrates Imtiaz's achievements but also reflects the broader progress in the sport, highlighting the growing influence and recognition of women in cricket globally.
