Netflix Faces Lawsuit Over Squid Game Plot Similarity

Netflix is being sued for allegedly copying the plot of the Indian film Luck for its hit series Squid Game.

Netflix is facing a lawsuit over its hit series Squid Game, which allegedly copies the storyline of a 2009 Indian movie titled Luck. Filmmaker Soham Shah, the creator of Luck, claims that the streaming giant, along with Squid Game writer Hwang Dong-hyuk, plagiarized the plot of his Hindi-language film. According to the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, Shah argues that both projects feature a group of desperate, indebted individuals competing in deadly games to win large sums of money, with wealthy spectators betting on the outcomes.

Shah states that he developed the plot in 2006 and released Luck globally in 2009. He further alleges that Netflix had access to his film due to its extensive advertising and marketing. The lawsuit points out that Hwang Dong-hyuk claims to have written Squid Game in the same year Luck was released, raising questions about the originality of the Netflix series.

The lawsuit also highlights that Squid Game contributed to a significant rise in Netflix’s market value, reportedly increasing by over $900 million. Shah is seeking compensation and is also aiming to block Netflix from further infringing on his copyright.

Netflix has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
