On the 12th anniversary of the Baldia factory fire tragedy, the families of the 260 workers who lost their lives staged a memorial in front of the affected factory on Wednesday.
The event, held annually, was jointly organised by the National Trade Union Federation, Ali Enterprises Factory Fire Affectees Association, and Home-Based Women Workers Federation Pakistan. Senior labour leader Habibuddin Junaidi presided over the event.
The bereaved families lit lamps in front of the photos of their deceased loved ones, paying tribute to their memory.
Addressing the gathering, labour leaders expressed their disappointment that even 12 years after the tragedy, the safety of workers remains a serious concern. They pointed out that daily industrial accidents continue to occur, highlighting the fact that the government, factory owners, and international brands prioritise profit over workers' lives.
The leaders particularly criticised the German brand KIK for its failure to apologise to the families of the victims despite repeated demands.
They said that millions of workers continue to endure inhumane conditions in factories producing garments for international brands, much like those at Ali Enterprises.
The speakers also slammed the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for its lack of transparency in awarding the $6 million compensation to an insurance company without consulting the families or labor organisations.
However, they acknowledged that the sacrifices made by the victims of the Baldia tragedy and the subsequent struggle of workers have led to labour-friendly legislation in Europe, particularly in Germany.
They also acknowledged the introduction of the Pakistan Accord, a program expected to provide safer working conditions.
