From Barron Trump to the Obamas: Where Presidential children went to college

From Obamas to the Trumps, Kennedys, Bidens, Bushes, and Clintons, presidential kids have attended top universities.

Deciding where to attend college is a pivotal moment for any teenager, but when you're the child of a U.S. president, the decision draws even more attention. 

Over the years, the children of America’s first families have chosen various prestigious schools, ranging from Ivy League universities to renowned state institutions. 

Here's a look at where some of the most notable first children went to college, dating back to the Kennedy family.

 

The Obamas  

Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of former President Barack Obama, took a gap year before attending Harvard University, where she graduated in 2021 with a degree in visual and environmental studies. 

Her younger sister, Sasha Obama, initially enrolled at the University of Michigan before transferring to the University of Southern California, graduating in 2023 with a sociology degree.

 

The Bidens 

President Joe Biden’s children have also attended top-tier schools. 

His son, Hunter Biden, earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University before going on to Yale Law School. Ashley Biden, Joe Biden’s daughter, graduated from Tulane University and later obtained her master's degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania. 

Biden's late son, Beau, completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania before attending law school at Syracuse University.

 

The Trumps 

The Trump family is no stranger to prestigious institutions. Donald Trump’s three eldest children—Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Tiffany Trump—followed in their father’s footsteps by attending the University of Pennsylvania. 

Barron Trump, however, has broken from tradition, choosing to attend New York University (NYU) for his undergraduate studies at the Stern School of Business.

 

The Bush Family 

Former President George W. Bush attended Yale University, his father’s alma mater, and went on to earn an MBA from Harvard Business School, making him the only U.S. president with an MBA. 

His twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, chose different paths. 

Jenna graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, while Barbara earned her degree from Yale.

 

The Clintons

Chelsea Clinton attended Stanford University for her undergraduate degree before moving on to the University of Oxford to earn a master's in international relations. 

She also holds a master's in public health from Columbia University, continuing a long tradition of first-family members pursuing higher education.

 

The Kennedys  

Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, attended Radcliffe College at Harvard University and later graduated from Columbia Law School. 

Her brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University and completed his law degree at New York University.

 

From Ivy League schools to prominent public universities, the children of U.S. presidents have often chosen prestigious academic paths.
