Olympic distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, was reportedly set on fire by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, in a violent altercation in Kenya on Sunday, according to authorities. The incident occurred after an argument over property between the couple, leading Ndiema to allegedly pour a flammable liquid on Cheptegei before igniting it, Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom told reporters.
Cheptegei, 26, sustained severe burns covering approximately 75% of her body and is currently receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. Ndiema also sustained injuries during the altercation and has been hospitalized. The Uganda Athletics Federation confirmed the incident on social media, expressing their regret and noting Cheptegei’s condition following the attack. They stated, "We regret to announce that our athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who competed at the Olympics, has suffered severe injuries and is hospitalized."
Cheptegei participated in the marathon event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing in 44th place. She had previously won a gold medal at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand. The incident has sparked an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
An official statement from the Uganda Athletics Federation further noted that they are deeply concerned about the welfare of their athletes and are closely monitoring the situation as the investigation unfolds.
