Staircase of old building collapses during heavy rain

As the port city experienced bouts of sporadic heavy showers and string winds on Saturday, more old trees were uprooted.

A pedestrian, Muhammad Saad Jamali, lost his life when a tree suddenly fell on him while passing through Qaim Al Mansoor Park in Federal B Area Block-16. The victim was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the police handed over the body to his heirs after completing medico-legal formalities.

In a separate incident, the stairs of a residential building near Burhani Hospital in the Arambagh area collapsed, trapping five people.

Fortunately, Rescue Team 1122 swiftly responded and safely rescued those trapped, including two children, a man, and two women. The rescue team also evacuated other occupants of the building.

Under the influence of the monsoon system originating from the Bay of Bengal, Surjani Town recorded the highest rainfall in the city during a five-day period (Tuesday to Saturday), with 226 millimetres of rain. For the entire month of August, Surjani Town also recorded the highest rainfall at 385mm.

According to the data obtained from 23 rain observatories installed across the city by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the recent monsoon spell from August 27 to August 31 saw Surjani Town receiving the most rainfall, with 226mm.

As a result of the system, Gulshan-e-Hadeed recorded 175mm, and Quaidabad recorded 161mm of rainfall. According to the released details, Nazimabad received 122mm, Keamari 105mm, and Korangi and North Karachi received more than 100mm of rain. Additionally, Faisal Base recorded 95mm, and Old Airport recorded 77.5mm of rainfall.

Due to the recent monsoon spell, Gulshan-e-Maymar recorded 75.6mm, Jinnah Terminal 75mm, Masroor Base 62.5mm, Bin Qasim 56.3mm, Orangi Town 44.3mm, DHA Phase II 43mm, and Saddar 37mm of rainfall.
