RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board has thwarted an attempt to seize government land worth billions of rupees in Saddar Bazaar next vehicle spare parts markets and workshops.

Iron shutters and steel angles were being installed at the site of the old latrines in courtyard of Mithu Khan before the Board intervened to halt the attempts at occupation. More than five marla of land was under danger of being encroached.

The land grabbing group planned to occupy Cantt Fund Land and construct large-size halls there. The public latrines established at the site in the past were no longer in use.

The staff of the Cantonment Board halted their plans by removing the angles and shutters. However, they were unable to take the construction material which included the angles and shutters into their custody.

Cantonment Board spokesperson Rashid Saqib said that the occupying group had been trying to encroach the land for several days. "No one can be allowed to occupy government land and if anyone tries this again, a police case will also be registered. Those responsible will be arrested," he said.

It should be noted that the site in question has the status of Cantt Fund property.
