ISLAMABAD:

A local court in Islamabad has served a notice to the Brazilian Ambassador to Pakistan, Olyntho Vieira, in connection with a lawsuit filed by former employees of the Brazilian embassy who were laid off.

The dismissed employees have taken legal action, protesting their terminations and seeking justice through the courts.

One of the former employees, Mubasher Sanjrani, filed a petition claiming that "since Ambassador Olyntho Vieira's arrival in Islamabad, a wave of dismissals targeting local staff has taken place at the embassy."

Sanjrani's petition alleges that the ambassador has justified these layoffs by terminating and unilaterally amending service contracts, without adhering to local laws or regulations set by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The petition includes a claim for damages and fines amounting to Rs90m against Brazil embassy. In response, the court issued notices to the embassy.

The legal advisors representing the embassy have responded by asserting that diplomatic missions are entitled to immunity under international law.
