Sindh home minister recommends effective legislation to tackle drug trafficking, mafia

Draft set to be finalised and presented for discussion at an upcoming cabinet meeting for approval

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar has recommended the introduction of an effective act to combat drug trafficking and mafia activities in the province.

A meeting was convened on Thursday to review the draft of the Sindh Control of Narcotics Act 2024, which was presented by the cabinet sub-committee. 

The draft is set to be finalised and subsequently presented for discussion at the upcoming cabinet meeting for approval. The meeting was attended by the prosecutor general, advocate generals, and secretaries from the law, excise, and narcotics control departments, along with other officials.

During the meeting, the secretary of Excise and Narcotics Control of Sindh provided a detailed briefing on the proposed act, highlighting its significance. 

Lanjar emphasised the urgent need for the formulation and implementation of the Narcotics Control Act, stating that its approval and enforcement would significantly weaken the drug mafias operating in the region.

The minister further expressed his commitment to improving the process of drafting, approving, and enforcing necessary laws, stressing that it is his duty as the law minister. 

He urged that the draft of the Narcotics Control Act 2024 be finalised swiftly and that any deleted or annulled suggestions be removed from the draft after review.

The meeting concluded with the decision to prepare a revised draft of the Sindh Control of Narcotics Act 2024, incorporating further suggestions and recommendations. This revised draft will be submitted for review, approval, and certification.
