The UK has marked a new chapter in its currency history with the release of the first £1 coins featuring the likeness of King Charles III. Nearly three million of these coins have been distributed to post offices and banks, each showcasing designs that highlight the King's commitment to the natural world.
On the reverse side of the coin, a prominent depiction of bees underscores King Charles' passion for conservation efforts. Rebecca Morgan, Director of Collector Services at the Royal Mint, expressed the significance of this release, stating, "It is an honor to unveil the King Charles III £1 coin to the public. We anticipate a buzz of excitement among collectors and the public alike as they discover this special piece of history in their change."
The new coin designs are part of a broader collection that celebrates British flora and wildlife, with eight nature-themed designs across denominations ranging from 1p to £2. The collection, developed in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, features beloved species such as red squirrels and capercaillie grouse, highlighting the importance of conservation.
While these new coins enter circulation, coins bearing the image of Queen Elizabeth II will continue to be used until they are gradually phased out based on demand. The size and shape of the new coins remain unchanged to ensure they are compatible with vending machines and automated systems.
