Italian boxer Angela Carini broke down in tears after abandoning her bout against transgender Algerian opponent Imane Khelif just 46 seconds into the fight, igniting significant controversy at the Olympics.

The 25-year-old welterweight’s headgear became dislodged twice within the brief encounter with Khelif, who was controversially allowed to compete despite being disqualified from the women’s world championships last year for failing testosterone and gender eligibility tests.

At the North Paris Arena, Carini explained her decision to withdraw was due to the impact of the blows she received. "I am heartbroken," Carini confessed. "I stepped into the ring to honour my father. I’ve always been called a warrior, but I had to prioritise my health. I’ve never been hit this hard before."

Carini, from Naples, added, "I entered the ring ready to fight and didn’t give up, but the pain from one punch was too intense, so I decided to stop. I’m leaving with my head held high." She elaborated on the severe pain she felt after the second punch, which struck her nose, making it impossible for her to continue.

Support for Carini surged online, with #IStandWithAngelaCarini trending and many criticising the perceived unfairness of the fight.

Riley Gaines posted, “Men don't belong in women's sports.”

Oli London commented, “This biological male just left his female opponent in tears after beating her in the Paris Olympics WOMEN'S boxing.”

Carini’s bravery and decision to safeguard her health resonated with many, underscoring the challenges she faced in such a contentious match.
