BALAKOT:

The torrential rains which hit various parts of the region have caused widespread devastation in several areas of Balakot.

The rising floodwaters of Munawar Nullah swept away the bridge connecting Kaghan Valley to the central region, severing the valley’s connection to Balakot. Two individuals and several vehicles parked near the canal were also washed away.

Kaghan police reported on the situation, stating that the floodwaters of the drain in Munawar valley caused not only the sweeping away of a bridge but also took along with it Abdul Rahman’s wife and his 14-year-old son. The authorities are still collecting data on the extent of the damage.

The floodwaters entered Mahandri Bazar, affecting numerous shops and causing significant damage. The Bhonja Valley was also impacted, with reports coming in of extensive damage to fish farms due to the flooding. Agricultural lands and trout fish farms in the valley were also affected. Additionally, there are reports of damage to fish farms in Ochri Jarid Nala, although the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

The situation has been further complicated by the closure of the Kaghan highway at multiple points due to landslides, resulting in significant challenges for tourists and passengers. The blockages led to the formation of long queues at various locations.

In a gesture of kindness, the Hotel Association Naran has offered free accommodation to stranded tourists following the closure of the Kaghan highway. They also announced a 50 per cent discount on the food available at the hotel. Hotel Association Naran President, Seth Matiullah, told the media that "tourists are our guests, and we will take care of them in every possible way." According to officials from the Kaghan Development Authority (KDA), between 10,000 and 15,000 tourists are currently present in Naran and the Upper Kaghan Valley. Tourism Police and KDA staff are present in the area to ensure their safety and well-being.
