Whichever language a song may be in, music at its core touches the heart of anyone who listens to it — a fact that A-lister Mahira Khan is acutely aware of. Openly declaring her love for the art form, the Humsafar star took to her Instagram handle to post a candid video of herself singing and dancing to Geela Dutt’s classic hit Tadbeer Se Bigadi Hui Taqdeer.

“I realised this recently — I don’t think anything in the world makes me escape as quickly as music does,” captioned the VJ-cum-actor in a heartfelt epiphany. “I was going through old videos and deleting them, and I realised this is it. It’s my thing. I like to have my music on.”

It will come as no surprise to Mahira’s fans that music is the star’s self-professed ‘thing’, or that she likes to have it on. Her love for music is evident in the trajectory of her career. Mahira cemented her position in the spotlight as a VJ on MTV Pakistan in 2006. A few years later in 2011, she made her film debut in a supporting role in Shoaib Mansoor’s Bol, where her character Ayesha nursed a passion for music. Mahira later began her singing career in 2017 when she starred as a rape victim in Verna. In 2019, she went on to play a leading role in the musical drama film Superstar, her highest grossing domestic film at the time. In other words, music seems to run through Mahira’s veins.

“And when I can’t resist (which is quite often) I have to get up and dance,” continued the star in her caption. Like her fans, Mahira, too, feels the inescapable pull of music, and the power it has to pull listeners into another world and, for a few moments, make them forget their problems. “Even on days when my heart is breaking or I’m feeling sad.. a song can take me somewhere else. Make me happy for that moment,” penned Mahira.

Mahira’s penchant for breaking into song and dance is one that those in her close circle know all too well. “Sometimes my make-up artist, my friends, my husband… they might find it sweet or funny and record me… sometimes, it’s so normal they don’t care,” added Mahira before fondly concluding, “They all know that it’s my happy place. It really is.”
