Hours of torrential rain caused widespread devastation in the Swabi district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday morning following a sweltering heatwave with temperatures reaching 53 degree Celsius.
Flash floods in streams and nullahs led to the drowning of three individuals. The rain started at 2:30am and continued until 8 am for approximately six hours.
During this time, heavy flooding occurred in the Badri Nullah, Gadoon Khwar, Zindai Khwar, and other seasonal streams.
Urban flooding caused the rainwater to enter homes and shops. According to Rescue 1122, a six-year-old boy, Yahya from Adina village, drowned in the Adina stream. There was also 21-year-old named Tahir who drowned in Zindai Khwar at Mall Lara, and a 65-year-old man named Rahim Gul from Nursery Banda Gohati who perished in the Pehur High Level Canal in Gohati village.
Rescue divers arrived at the scenes and started operations to retrieve the bodies. In various areas of the district, rescue personnel used water pumps to drain the accumulated rainwater.
