Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood producer, has been transferred from Rikers Island to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of COVID-19, pneumonia, and other health issues.
His spokesperson confirmed to The New York Post that the transfer, citing a "myriad of health conditions" including diabetes, high blood pressure, and spinal stenosis.
This transfer marks Weinstein's second stay at Bellevue this year. In April, he was admitted with pneumonia and received special treatment, including access to amenities like a private bathroom and phone, which were not available to other detainees. He was subsequently returned to Rikers Island following media scrutiny of the arrangement.
Weinstein's health concerns arise as he awaits retrial on rape and sexual assault charges in Manhattan, with a tentative start date set for November 12th. His legal team previously expressed concerns about his health deteriorating due to the diet at Rikers Island.
Despite the overturned conviction in New York, Weinstein remains incarcerated due to a separate 16-year sentence for a rape conviction in California. The transfer to Bellevue Hospital raises questions about his medical care and the potential impact on his upcoming retrial.
