KARACHI:

A section of a dilapidated building constructed during the British colonial era on Burns Road collapsed on Tuesday, luckily causing not loss of life or damage to any other property. Officials from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) arrived at the scene and got the vulnerable structure evacuated and sealed.

As per details, a portion on the second floor of the historic building caved in to heavy monsoon downpour. The concrete debris fell on the sidewalk below, but causing no harm as no one was there at the time.

SBCA Director General Rashid Solangi ordered deployment of the Dangerous Committee and Demolition Team to visit the site and assess the building's condition. The team declared it unsafe after an inspection. Subsequently, the residents were evacuated.

"The building has been deemed unsafe due to its dilapidated condition, characterised by visible cracks," stated Solangi. The incident, while causing structural damage, did not result in any casualties, he confirmed.

Solangi stated that the SBCA has taken proactive measures, including issuing notices to vulnerable buildings prior to the start of monsoon season in Karachi. These notices were displayed on relevant buildings to raise awareness and ensure safety precautions.

"Under the directive of Local Government Minister Sindh Saeed Ghani, a rain emergency plan was already in place at the SBCA," added Solangi. "All affected buildings are being evacuated with administrative support, and we urge the public to vacate any structures identified as unsafe to prevent potential harm."
