Gina Gershon, renowned for her daring roles, recently recounted a pivotal career moment when she defied her agents' warnings to star in the 1996 film Bound, directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski.
Speaking on the It Happened In Hollywood podcast, Gershon revealed how her agents initially opposed her decision, fearing it would jeopardize her career.
They argued against her portrayal of Corky, a character in a lesbian relationship, following her previous controversial role in Showgirls.
"They were adamant, saying 'You can't play a lesbian; it'll ruin your career,'" recalled Gershon. Despite the resistance, Gershon remained steadfast in her belief in the script and the Wachowskis' directorial prowess. "I believed in these directors," she affirmed. "It wasn't just about the characters' sexual orientation; it was about trust and larger themes."
Bound marked a significant turning point in Gershon's career, pairing her with Jennifer Tilly in a tale of love and crime. The film, celebrated for its noir elements, follows Corky and Violet (Tilly) as they conspire to steal from a mobster. Directed by the Wachowskis, the film showcased their early talent before their iconic Matrix series.
Despite initial apprehensions, Gershon's decision to take on Bound paid off, solidifying her reputation as an actress unafraid to challenge stereotypes. "The Wachowskis are true geniuses," Gershon praised. "Their vision and skill were evident from the start."
