Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has presented an extensive overview of the provincial government's development initiatives under 'Vision Sindh', showcasing significant strides made over the past 15 years.
The presentation, held at the Auditorium of the Sindh Assembly on Thursday, featured visual representations and garnered attendance from diverse stakeholders, including civil society members, chambers of trade & commerce, media houses, religious leaders, and government officials.
The 'Vision Sindh' presentation provided a comprehensive overview of Sindh's development trajectory under the PPP government, highlighting achievements across energy, infrastructure, healthcare, education, housing, and social welfare.
Energy security
Addressing energy security, Chief Minister Shah stressed the contribution of Thar Coal projects, which collectively generate 3,240 MW of electricity. Listing specific projects, he stated that Thar Coal Block-I's 1,320 MW capacity and subsequent contributions from Thar Coal Block-II, Thar Energy Limited, Thal Nova Power Thar Limited, and Lucky Electric Power. CM Shah further stated that these projects utilise local resources, reducing dependency on imported fuels.
Infrastructure development
The chief minister also spoke about his administration's efforts in flood management, citing enhancements to flood protection bunds and regulators along the Indus River. He highlighted the expanded capacities of Danister Tail Regulator and Danister Aral head regulator, crucial for flood control in Sindh. Moreover, CM Shah mentioned ongoing projects, including small dams across Nagarparkar and Kohistan, aimed at water retention for agriculture and drinking purposes.
Education and health
In the education sector, CM Shah outlined the establishment and upgrades of universities and schools across the province. He showcased rehabilitated schools and reaffirmed the government's commitment to educational infrastructure development.
Turning to the healthcare sector, the chief minister celebrated achievements in partnership with Child Life Foundation, ensuring every child in the province has access to emergency care within 30 minutes. He drew the audience's attention to the success of modern emergency rooms and telemedicine networks, significantly reducing pediatric mortality rates compared to global averages.
Housing & social welfare
Discussing housing initiatives, Chief Minister Shah highlighted efforts to rebuild homes for flood-affected populations, surpassing targets by accommodating 15 million beneficiaries. He disclosed financial details, indicating substantial investments and economic benefits stemming from the housing programme.
In the social welfare sector, CM Shah stated that a sum of Rs12 billion has been allocated in the provincial budget for fiscal 2024-25 to support vulnerable populations through the Sindh People's Support Programme. He outlined plans for strengthening social protection systems in collaboration with international agencies to target the most impoverished districts.
Urban development
The chief minister shared details of infrastructure projects in Karachi, including road constructions, public transport enhancements like the intra-district People's Bus Service, and the introduction of electric buses, including Asia's first women-exclusive bus service. He also highlighted initiatives in agriculture, sports, and youth affairs, underscoring the government's commitment to holistic development across all sectors.
Future plans & challenges
Looking forward, the chief minister revealed future plans, including healthcare expansions at JPMC and SIUT, and upcoming infrastructure projects like Safe City and the Malir Expressway. CM Shah expressed frustration with critics' skepticism, highlighting the tangible impact of his government's initiatives despite challenges.
CM Shah affirmed the government's commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development, aiming to improve the quality of life for all residents of Sindh.
