Gelsenkirchen, Germany, is set to undergo a temporary transformation as it prepares to host Taylor Swift for the first time during her European 'Eras Tour'.
Renaming itself 'Swiftkirchen', the city aims to celebrate the pop star's arrival with a series of special events and gestures.
The initiative stemmed from a petition by Aleshanee Westhoff, a devoted German fan of Swift, which received enthusiastic support from local authorities. Mayor Karin Welge described the renaming as a "great idea" in a letter acknowledging the community's excitement.
In anticipation of Swift's performances on July 17, 18, and 19 at the Veltins Arena in Schalke, Gelsenkirchen has unveiled signs bearing its temporary moniker. Additional signs are expected to appear at key locations throughout the city in the coming days, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
Markus Schwardtmann, a spokesman for the city, teased surprises for Swift's fans, promising "many small and large surprises" to enrich their experience. This includes the introduction of a special 'Taylor Swift tram' by the local public transit operator BOGESTRA and plans for a dedicated stone on the Gelsenkirchen Walk of Fame in Swift's honor.
The economic impact of Swift's tour, dubbed 'Swiftflation' by some analysts, has sparked discussions in the EU. While some economists speculate about temporary price increases driven by heightened demand during her concerts, others view these effects as short-lived.
Swift's popularity has also fueled speculation in the US, with rumors swirling about potential political and psychological leverage. The Pentagon has officially denied any plans involving Swift for psychological operations.
Following her performances in Gelsenkirchen, Swift will continue her tour to Hamburg and Munich, with expectations of sold-out shows and massive fan turnout.
