Lupita Nyong'o opens up about playing a woman with cancer in A Quiet Place: Day One

She reveals that the role was a therapeutic experience for her, as she had lost Chadwick Boseman to colon cancer.

Lupita Nyong'o is sharing her personal connection to her latest role in A Quiet Place: Day One, where she plays a woman with terminal cancer. The Oscar-winning actress recently told People magazine that playing Sam, a poet who is battling cancer and aliens, was a daunting task, but ultimately a therapeutic experience.

Nyong'o revealed that her close friend and Black Panther co-star Chadwick Boseman's death from colon cancer in August 2020 had a profound impact on her. "In the end, it was actually very therapeutic because I had just experienced not too many years ago the death of Chadwick Boseman, which shook me to my core," she said.

Nyong'o added that playing a character who is facing mortality was a reminder to live life more intentionally. "When we think we have all the time in the world, we can really take people for granted and experiences for granted," she said.

The role was also a personal one for Nyong'o, as she had recently lost a close friend to cancer. "I definitely was thinking about that a lot," she said.

A Quiet Place: Day One, directed by Michael Sarnoski, is currently playing in theaters and also stars Joseph Quinn.
